Our History

All Creatures Veterinary Clinic, Inc. was established in 1984 by Dr. Joanne Rehn. Dr. Rehn began the practice out of the back of her truck. When she opened at our current location in June 1985, she was the only veterinarian and had two support staff members, a technician, and a receptionist. The practice has grown over the years to employ several veterinarians and more support staff. The clinic building has also grown considerably with the first edition of the reception and examination rooms finished in 1995. The latest addition was completed in 2005 and includes a spacious waiting room and five examination rooms. The parking area has also been expanded and now contains ample room for employees and clients. Over the years, All Creatures has treated anything from horses to snakes. As the clientele has changed, the practice found it necessary to discontinue large animal services, and focus on dogs and cats.

We have been honored nearly every year since 1995 as the “Best in the Valley” Veterinary Clinic in the Mat-Su Valley in the Frontiersman poll. We have been listed in Alaska Business Monthly as one of the top 50 women-owned businesses in the State of Alaska every year since 2004. All Creatures was also featured in an article in the August 2009 edition of the Alaska Business Monthly magazine. All Creatures has also been an associate member of the American Animal Hospital Association since 1996.

We are active in our community and participate in local efforts including offering free first aid training to the Alaska State Trooper dog handlers and supporting the famous Iditarod dog musher DeeDee Jonrowe. Dr. Rehn has served the community as a member of the Valley Hospital Association operating board. She and Dr. Masteller have also been members of the borough Animal Control board. During the extensive Miller’s Reach Wildfire of 1996, we housed as many as 75 animals for people who were displaced from their homes. There were dogs, cats, chickens, and even a llama housed here for a short time. The staff donated many hours for these animals. We also treated several of the burned animals from the fire with great success.

Facility and Equipment

All Creatures Veterinary Clinic features a large, comfortable waiting area. We have five examination rooms for our doctors to examine your pets in. Our fifth examination room has its own exit, which allows for discretion in those times when extra privacy is desired.

Our radiology department is equipped with a digital x-ray machine as well as a digital ultrasound machine. We have the ability to send both x-rays and ultrasound images to a Veterinary Radiologist if our doctors need a consult. We can now submit x-rays digitally to the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) for screening potential breeding dogs. If the doctor requests an electronic ECG, we have the ability to perform this in-house and then send the results to a board-certified Cardiologist for review.

We have twenty-four kennels separated into three rooms plus an isolation room for potentially contagious patients. Two of our kennel rooms have an assortment of kennel sizes to accommodate the vast size variety of our canine patients, while one room is dedicated to our feline patients. Outdoor fenced runs are available for exercise and “bathroom” use.

We have sophisticated in-house laboratory capabilities, but we also utilize an outside laboratory service where internal medicine specialists are available.

Our pharmacy contains some of the more routinely used veterinary medications. This allows us to fill prescriptions on the same day as the pet’s appointment. We stock a variety of prescription dog and cat foods. We also have an assortment of toys for dogs and cats.

We have a surgical suite equipped with two surgery tables. Both tables have their own anesthesia machine and monitoring equipment. Our dental room is equipped with its own anesthesia machine and monitoring equipment, as well as a digital dental radiograph and our dental machine.
