Learning How to Manage Anxiety in Pets

Some pets are more anxious than others, and that anxiety and stress can manifest as behavioral problems that affect your everyday life. Luckily, you and your veterinarian can work together to develop a plan to manage your pet’s anxiety.

What is Making Your Pet Anxious?

First, you need to identify the underlying cause of your pet’s anxiety. It could be that you’re coming and going more often than usual, there are more strangers coming in and out of the house, construction or traffic noises are louder than usual, or you have brought a new pet or human into the household. It could even be that you rearranged your furniture, or are playing music louder than normal! Understanding the cause of your pet’s stress will help you minimize it so he can calm down.

Making Environmental Changes to Calm Your Pet

If changes to your environment are stressing your pet out, you can create a safe, calming space for your pet. Put a bed and some toys in a dark, quiet space where he can retreat if he starts to feel overwhelmed. This will give him the chance to self-soothe and manage his own fear. Consider turning a closet floor, spare bedroom or bathroom, or under the bed into a nest your pet can use when he is stressed out.

Anti-Anxiety Aids & Medication

If environmental changes are not enough to manage anxiety, or if your pet’s anxiety is affecting his health or causing destructive behaviors, your veterinarian might recommend anti-anxiety aids or medication. Some veterinarians offer CBD oil, which can have a calming effect on pets. There are also prescription anti-anxiety medications that can calm your pet and help him overcome stress and fear.

If you need assistance managing your pet’s anxiety, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can determine if there is an underlying health problem or environmental issue that is causing your pet stress. He can then determine the best method for helping your pet overcome the issue.
