Answering Your Questions About Pet Immunization

Most humans get several vaccines when they’re born, and even more as they grow up–but did you know that pets need vaccines too? Your dog or cat should be getting some essential immunizations throughout their life in order to promote overall well-being and health. With August being National Immunization Awareness Month, what better time to learn more about pet vaccines and why they’re important?

What are vaccines?

Vaccines are medicines that are designed to protect your pet from certain diseases. They contain a harmless amount of whichever disease they are meant to prevent in order to get your pet’s immune system to fight that disease more effectively. When your pet gets a vaccine, the vaccine triggers a response from your pet’s immune system, and this response is what can help protect your pet from harmful diseases.

What vaccines does my pet need?

The types of vaccines your pet needs will vary based on a few factors. For example, cats may not need the same immunizations as dogs. There may also be vaccinations required by law, such as the rabies vaccine. Examples of vaccines that dogs need include protection against canine distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. Cats are typically immunized against feline distemper, feline calicivirus, and rabies. Note that this is not an exhaustive list, and it’s best to speak with your veterinarian to see which vaccines are best for your specific pet.

If your dog or cat is missing some of their vaccines–or if you’re not sure which ones they need in the first place–the best place to turn is your local veterinary hospital. Your veterinarian can review your pet’s medical needs to determine which vaccines are best for your furry friend. Don’t wait until it’s too late to keep your pet from contracting a serious disease. Get them vaccinated early for their health and your peace of mind.
